We are now finally into our normal summer weather with the temperatures building up and irrigation systems in the gardens working overtime – but then the sunshine is what brought most of us to Spain. Last year we held a daytime run in August and although it was surprisingly successful we have decided this year to leave it until later in the day when it should be cooler, for cars and people, and hold an evening run. So watch the website (www.solclassiccarclub.net) for details!
The BBQ evening was very well attended and staff at MGCC did us proud, both in the standard of service and the food. Members and friends enjoyed a very pleasant evening on the beautiful terrace overlooking the main fairways.
The Committee has been looking at various designs and will be selecting the three "front-runners" at the August Committee meeting so that the membership can give their views. Remember that it is your Club, so members need to participate in the final decision – the Committee wants your views, so let us have them!
The July run was organised by Chris Want and Ross Davis who are owed a vote of thanks for all their efforts. They had even arranged a rather special raffle so that one lucky couple won dinner, bed and breakfast at our lunch venue, the charming Molino del Santo in Benaojan. The winners were Lynn and Sandra Lacey, a reward perhaps for missing the May picnic when their Porsche didn't arrive in Valtocado!
It was, predictably, a hot day and some of the older cars needed to cool down at the coffee stop - as did most of the drivers and passengers. But the scenery was stunning with clear blue skies and amazing views. And the road up from Estepona through the pine forests and down into the Genal valley had obviously been recently repaired after the winter rains which was an added bonus.
The lunch was one to remember in a delightful setting next to the splashing mill stream under ancient willows and fig trees. The "stream" had looked a great deal more impressive during the winter rains as the photographs inside the hotel showed. A fuller report of the day will appear on the website.
This was a very topical subject and Peter Graves, the presenter, gave a knowledgeable talk about the mechanics of the events in the Gulf of Mexico which continue to make headlines.
Members were given an insight into how a deep sea well was drilled and the kind of decisions an Oil Company has to make when confronted with difficult problems. Peter started off explaining that an accident is never one single event but a series of errors that culminate over time. The question and answer session at the end of the meeting produced more inside information. We have all thanked Peter for his efforts and extended him an invitation to attend our monthly technical meeting.
As it is the holiday season and many of our members are away there will be no Technical Meeting in August.
Club night is as usual from 7.30 pm onwards at the Marbella Golf and Country Club. As it is the height of summer, visitors and friends are more than welcome to come along with members and enjoy the evening. After dinner the Committee will be showing members the final selections for our new Club LOGO and a local financial professional will give a 10 minute talk on the current economic situation which is affecting us all.
This evening run is being organised by Ross Candler, our Events Co-ordinator and details will be circulated to members and appear on the website shortly.
So let's see you out and about in your Classic - after all the cars are what makes the Club!
Your Committee
