Our first ever Year Book is now available and well worth a read. It describes the Club's 2009 season in words and pictures. Here is a download link for it. Be warned: it is a large file (4 MiB). It is in *.pdf format so you will also need Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to open it: 2009 Yearbook.
Members might remember that last June (2009) we presented Torreviaja Classic Car Club with a cup to be awarded each year in memory of our visit. Well, things come to pass and in December, they presented the cup to the winner of their driving test. President, David Hudson, wrote about this event in their monthly bulletin. Here is what he had to say.:
The day of Innocents is part of the Christmas story when Herod ordered all the new born to be killed to prevent a future uprising. But the Spanish quirky humour has twisted the meaning and created a fools' day to play practical tricks on the innocent. If you saw someone walking around with a paper man on their back then they had been "Inocente, Inocente".
Traditionally Club Torrevieja Classics Cars have celebrated this day by doing something silly and this year was no exception. They met in the Hotel Fortaleza in Vistabella to receive their paper Inocente man and then the caravan of Classic Cars circumnavigated Orihuela to the old Callosa road that is part of the Camino del Cid. Driving into the large car park of the Hostel La Rotundo they found their first problem (or practical joke) was that due to the bad weather over half was flooded. While members retired to sample the hospitality of the hostel, that was especially opened for the club, heads were put together to use the available space left to test the members driving skills.
Then the fun began! The first test was to drive on a circular course holding an egg and spoon out of the window. The first to go was Nathan who in his massive Mercedes 380 SL showed how it is done. Some improvised antics with passengers also holding their egg and spoon entertained the spectators but most navigated successfully.
The next test was to throw an orange and lemon from the driving window into a bucket which proved surprisingly very difficult. Finally they were tested on a slalom course finishing by parking between two markers and not touching the rear one. Though the tests was treated as a bit of fun some outstanding controlled driving was shown by the old cars and older drivers who had to put up with barracking and hooters from the spectators. Even with limited turning circle both Ian in his Kallista and Ron in the MGC GT both having over 2 litre engines had no problems. Dieter changed to a Rally driver for the day throwing his Mercedes Benz W107 around the courses!
Michael driving one handed with different passengers on his Rewaco FX5 family trike deserves special mention. A couple passing by from Andalusia in their Classic red Mercedes stopped to enjoy the fun and make friends. There were also a few toots from the heavy haulage lorries which added to the fun.
Time to leave having first "Inocente" the Hostel staff, then off through the Orihuela tunnel and the hamlet Bonanza then turning to pass under the huge water pipes that burst out of the Orihuela Sierra and force their way into the Arneva Sierra in the distance. The glinting pipes over the campo always look impressive. Then it was a quick left towards the next goal of Resturante Kati in Los Desamprados, sweeping into another large car parking, members tumbled out of the cars with a bubble of laughter as they swapped stories. This stopped on entering the Salon to enjoy the magnificently laid table waited for them.
Again another establishment was opened up especially for the Club and as the owners were told that the club had arrived they and their children received their Inocente man. The presentation of the Ladies cup was a complete surprise for Lesley who guessed within four kilos of the weight of the Chairman's SEAT 600 of 614 kilos.
The main presentation was the Sol Classic Car Club cup for the outstanding driving skills and from a point system devised by Angela and ably worked out by Susan Lakin the scoring showed that Ron Blackwell driving the MGC GT romped home the winner. To end the day on a silly note, following the end of an enormous meal, the members trooped out to enjoy a twenty five battery of fireworks in the day light!
