I had been considering upgrading my 1970 MG B to electronic ignition control, but the cost of the replacement distributor from the MG Owners' Club was too high for me.
However, searching on E-Bay, I found a kit that simply replaces the mechanical contact breaker in 25D4 distributors by an electronic set. The cost was £17.12 plus postage, it took about half an hour to fit (with nothing to prevent easy reversion to the original design), and works like a dream! The engine now starts more easily, never misses a beat and I have had to adjust the carburretor to restore the slow-running from around 1000 RPM down to it's previous 750 - 800. I can thoroughly recommend this item - that is apparently being marketed by a small businessman who deserves support.
The link to the the E-Bay page is: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=120315560089

Thanks John, that is a really good tip. I have had a look at the ebay entry and they have even reduced the prices now!

I have bought and installed one of these in my MGB with a 45D4 distributor and it was very simple. It started first time and I adjusted the timing with my timing light according to Haynes manual and correct engine model. On the road however, I had to advance it to get good performance and on the overrun at about 3500 rpm severe hunting sets in and it felt almost like someone was intermittently pressing on the brake. I had checked the vacuum advance when fitting the unit and that is ok. The red module I bought is specifically for this distributor so what could be happening? Any ideas anyone?

Hello John.
No not yet. I'm going to fiddle around with it a bit and if I am flummoxed I will. I'm thinking about removing or disabling the vacuum advance to see what that does.
Hasta pronto,
Nick. _________________ Nick the "blaster" |
